Foreign Language Standards (Grade 8)

Benchmark I: Narrate an event, a personal experience or an original story.

10. Report on a past or present event (e.g., Caesar’s assassination, major school activity).

Description:
  • Students are divided into smaller groups (3-4 students). Each group is assigned a Native American tribe that was once (or is still) prevalent in South America. The groups research their tribe using Culturegrams, Enciclopedia Estudianil, and Country Reports. Following their research, students will write a script for, film, edit and post a digital video that provides the following information: When the tribe populated South America, where on the continent they lived, a minimum of 5 significant facts about the population, a minimum of 1 significant event that occurred during the time of the tribe's existence in South America, and (if applicable) what drove them from their land.

Supporting Research:
  • Learning to represent content digitally is an increasingly important skill that must be fostered in the classroom in order to enable students to become adults who are visually literate.

Tried & True or New & Innovative:

  • Although may students are comfortable with using databases and Youtube for accessing information, the majority of them are not comfortable with using technology to create and upload their own videos. Therefore, while the databases and video viewing technology might be considered Tried and True at this point, the use of digital video recording devices and editing software to create their own movies and upload them would be considered New & Innovative.
